A Walk Through Vysehrad

But before our walk, here's our "home" for the next two weeks, Accome Hotel Julis. It also has a small kitchenette with water-boiler, refrigerator, microwave, toaster, an assortment of dishes and utensils and a small dishwasher.


The breakfast buffet includes a wonderful assortment of breads, cheeses, meats, salads, eggs, jams and juices. No pork knuckle though.




Now, Vysehrad, which has a small v over the s and is pronounced something like "VEESH-eh-rod." Vysehrad is a neighborhood south of the main tourist area. The centerpiece is the Church of St. Peter and St. Paul -- one spire for each saint.


The doors of the church are especially spectacular. Note the mini Gothic arches within the big arches. We couldn't photograph the inside of the church, but it's highly ornate with paintings from the Art Nouveau period. Imagine Mucha-ish paintings of the saints.



And speaking of Art Nouveau, the cemetery adjacent to the church, which includes graves of many famous Czechs, includes many headstones in the Art Nouveau (or is it Art Deco?) style. Note the "typography" and design of the carving on this one:
